Campaign for UK Fiscal Responsibility

Our Fiscal Position

The position can be very complex because of the various ways different aspects can be measured and compared. We try to cut through the complexity and present the information in a way which is easier to understand.

The three key aspects are the increasing size of the National Debt the massive future spending commitments that have been made that require funding and the numerous risks that we have not allowed for.

We explain this in a little more depth but will continue to add further information.

Why is it of Concern?

For some time respective governments have wanted to 'keep quiet' about the state of the nation's finances. The reasons for this are that they do not want to cause alarm and also the measures necessary to bring them under control invariably do not go down well with the electorate.

Unfortunately most organisations whose views could be respected see our current position as being unsustainable. We explain why this is the case.

What can we do?

In many respects the fact that we live in a democracy has contributed to the problems. Because politicians want to remain in power they like to offer what appears to be giveaways without the tax or efficiency measures in place to fully compensate for the expenditure. This trend has increased recently. However our democracy is what can rescue us. We need to form a view based on the facts and if concerned lobby for a greater emphasis to be placed on properly managing the public finances. This is something that we can drive through this Campaign but equally every individual can play a part.

Our Aims

  • To bring about a more responsible approach to the management of the UK public finances with a view to containing the debts and unfunded commitments that continue to accrue.

  • To give a voice to everyone who is frustrated by the failure to control the public finances with a view to helping to bring about change.

  • To prevent social, financial or political upheaval and any resultant fallout occurring as a result of the ongoing decline in the national finances.

  • To create an environment in which politicians are supported and encouraged to take actions that are fiscally prudent.

The Initial Planned Campaign Actions

  1. Collate and present information that will help to inform.
  2. Mobilise public opinion that the UK public finances need to urgently be brought under control and encourage public participation in the Campaign.
  3. Lobby government to give controlling the public finances a high priority.
  4. Challenge the government over public sector inefficiencies and waste.
  5. Help to encourage a national mindset of seeking long term fiscal prudence over short term giveaways.
  6. Work with the media and high profile people to give momentum to the Campaign.
  7. Monitor the government's compliance with the Budget Responsibility Act 2024 and take them to task if there is any shortcoming.
  8. Raise sufficient funds to expand, intensify and sustain the Campaign.
